China continues to stay on top of the overall gold total though with nine, although the United States is starting to cut into that lead. Michael Phelps and the United States women's gymnastics team both helped the USA in that regard, as each won team gold in the relay and the team event respectively.

As for other swimmers, Allison Schmitt won the 200 meter individual freestyle event, and Caitlin Leverenz finished with a bronze in the 200 meter indivdiual medley to get the United States four more swimming medals overall on the day. The favored United Statest women's gymnastics team also captured gold and it was a pretty big beatdown, besting the next best opponent by a few points.
